Minimum Qualifications

High school graduate or have completed and passed a GED ® certification program as mandated by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training Standards Commission. Must be at least 21 years of age.Must be currently certified by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission as a police officer. Must be able to pass a background investigation. Valid NC Driver’s License and clear driving history. Must possess three years of experience as a full-time law enforcement officer.


Work Experience

Three to five years of experience as a Police Officer. Proficiency in common law enforcement software applications (e.g. video, report writing, P2P, NCAWARE) and business software (e.g. Microsoft office products).

Preferred Qualifications

Two-year degree from an accredited college or university. Previous experience as a police supervisor. Previous experience in campus law enforcement and / or student development. Familiarity with Title IX, Clery Act, VAWA, Campus SaVE Act. At least one year of experience directly related to campus community policing, supervision, and crisis management. Field Training Officer and current General Instructor certification preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

1. Strong interpersonal skills, and effective oral and written communication/public relation skills;
2. Knowledge of the NC General Statutes, individual rights, search and seizure, and the methods, procedures, and practices used in an investigation; 
3. Knowledge of Police administration theories, principles, methods, techniques, and strategies pertaining to a comprehensive community college district safety, security, and police services operation.

4. Knowledge of principles and practices of supervision and personnel administration for operational effectiveness.

5. Knowledge of principles and practices of disaster and emergency response

6. Knowledge of Federal, state, and local criminal and traffic laws and related court decisions, department policies, general orders, and operation orders.

7. Knowledge of FERPA, CLERY, VAWA, and SaVE acts.

8. Ability to utilize records management system to develop crime patterns, etc…

9. Ability to maintain confidentiality.

10. Ability to write comprehensive reports, maintain complete, and accurate records. 

11. Ability to work under pressure, stressful situations, and deadlines.

12. Perform a broad range of supervisory responsibilities.

Essential Functions

The employee serving in this position assists the Chief of Campus Police with the supervision of daily police activities involved in traffic and field patrol, crime prevention, community relations, and related services and activities. Work includes reviewing reports that will be entered into the records management system, evidence control, and the administration of in service training and conducting training for departmental personnel. The position oversees and participates in all work activities; assumes responsibility for assigned special programs, projects, or department-wide functions or activities; and performs a variety of administrative and technical tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility. Additionally, this position serves the college as a sworn law enforcement officer with the legal power of arrest.

Job Duties

1. Supervises in the absence of the Chief of Police and participates in the work of Police Officers who are assigned specified duties. Guides, assists, and instructs officers in the handling of non-routine cases.

2. Plans, organizes, directs, and coordinates a variety of law enforcement and crime prevention services and activities in a multi-site campus setting.

3. Prepares and administers briefings and deploys officers to site assignments in accordance with the needs of the College.

4. Conducts department training while keeping abreast of laws of the State of NC and Durham Tech requirements.

5. Responds to major crimes, accident scenes, and emergencies; assumes initial command; establishes field command posts and implements the Incident Command System; may act as incident commander until such time as a higher-ranking person assumes command.

6. Receives and reviews all crime, incident, and arrest reports. Ensures such reports are correctly and properly written and submitted to the appropriate law enforcement or prosecuting agency in a timely manner.

7. Prepares activity reports and reports on cases investigated and operates vehicles.

8. Reviews and maintains department policies, regulations, and operational procedures. Ensures that officers understand and perform in compliance with established policies, regulations, and procedures.

9. Supervises training of new officers on departmental policies, procedures, and activities. May serve as a training officer.

10. Conducts regular and recurring inspections of personnel and equipment.

11. Participate in the development and administration of goals, objectives, and procedures.

12. Provides leadership consistent with the mission and function of the College; understands the uniqueness of law enforcement in a collegial environment, and is sensitive to the safety needs of students, faculty, and staff.

13. Provides leadership and demonstrates by example a community policing model for the College, including participation in committees, crime prevention, and other problem-solving approaches to law enforcement in education.

14. Develop, plan, schedule, and present crime prevention programs.

15. Serve as liaison officer for the department, interacting with other College departments and other law enforcement agencies.

16. Conducts internal affairs investigations and investigation of citizen complaints as necessary.

17. Participates in shift activities as necessary including enforcing local and state laws; issue citations and make arrests.

18. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Physical Demands

The employee must be able to stand, walk, drive, climb over obstacles, squat/kneel, reach, grasp, push/pull, twist/bend, occasionally lift/carry up to 100 lbs., finger, talk, hear, and see. Must maintain a level of fitness to perform the job requirements. Must maintain physical and mental readiness to react to sudden/dramatic changes in working conditions.

Required Working Hours

Scheduled Hours would be normally Monday through Friday but some special events and investigations will require night/weekend work.

Hiring Range

$55,359 annually
